Policy for Desktop and Notebook Computers on
the Biology Network
DRAFT 1.1
11-4-2004
All computers and other digital devices with direct connection to the
Arts & Sciences Network (ASN) must conform to Arts & Sciences
Information Sciences and Technology (AS&SIST) policies (http://www.aas.duke.edu/comp/security/computers.html).
Minimum requirements for access to the ASN through the Biology network
include:
1. Secure passwords for all accounts.
2. Maintenance of an up-to-date operating system, including all security
patches, and a functioning procedure for regularly applying updates (e.g.,
Yum, BigFix, Microsoft or Apple Software Updates).
3. Creation of a Biology administrator account.
4. Installation of remote administrative software (e.g., sshd, TightVNC,
Apple Remote Desktop, or Windows XP Remote Desktop), with remote access
given to the Biology Administrator.
5. For Microsoft Windows or Apple OS, installation of virus scanning
software (e.g., Network Associates Virex or VirusScan, or Symantec’s
AntiVirus), with virus definitions kept current.
6. Assignment to the computer of an agreed-upon network name that must
not be changed.
All computers owned by the Department of Biology will be brought into
conformance with these conditions by the Biology computer team upon setup.
To receive administrative rights to departmentally-owned computers, users
must read the materials provided on the Arts & Sciences Administrative
Access Certification site (http://www.aas.duke.edu/comp/security/certification/),
and submitting the associated request form. It is highly recommended that
users of personal computers also read through these materials.
