LECTURE 1: SCIENTIFIC HYPOTHESES
(Click on link)
In-class exercise:
On a trip to a recently discovered planet, a biological
survey turned up one species of unicellular
organisms (see FIRST VISIT panel). These organisms were blue and spherical
with projections resembling
cilia. There were two mating types (+ and -).
On a second visit to the planet 100,000 years later,
a biological survey team found two species
of unicellular organisms (see SECOND VISIT panel). One was identical
to the organism found
during the first visit. The other was elongated and green, with projections
resembling flagella
at one end only.
Develop an hypothesis to explain the difference in outcome of the two surveys.
