Duke University Plant Teaching and Research Facility

About the Research Greenhouse

Built in 2004, the Research Greenhouse is equipped with some of the latest technology in greenhouse-controlled space. The total facility spans 12,676 square feet. This space encompasses eight growing zones separated by airlocks, a propagation room, and a well-stocked headhouse. Conditions in the growing zones are computer controlled and monitored 24/7. Air-cooling is supplied by chilled water to fan coil units under benches. Heat is supplied by perimeter fin tube for radiated heat. Growing zones are designed to stay within a three-degree set point. Supplemental lighting is with either 430 watt or 1000-watt high-pressure sodium lamps. Rolling benches allow for increased growing space within zones. Adjacent to the greenhouse is the Biology Phytotron which houses additional instrumentation and equipment shared with the Research Greenhouse. Seasoned horticulturist Beverly Calhoun oversees daily operation of this facility.
