Thellungiella halophila is a close relative of Arabidopsis in the family Brassicaceae. It is extremely tolerant to saline soils, as well as to cold and drought. It is currently being sequenced at the DOE Joint Genome Institute, and has a number of advantages for genomic analysis, including high frequency transformation, resources for transcription profiling, and a BAC library of large insert clones. We are developing a linkage map and recombinant inbred lines for identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Populations of T. halophila are found in China , Siberia, and North America, and there are a number of congeneric species across Asia. |
