Abstract.-  Based upon molecular studies, the genus Coprinus Pers. is subdivided into Coprinus sensu stricto (Agaricaceae), and Coprinellus P. Karst., Coprinopsis P. Karst., and Parasola gen. nov. in the new family Psathyrellaceae.  The nomenclatural history and typifications of synonyms previously listed under Coprinus are reviewed.  It is demonstrated that taxonomic characters previously not considered to be generically significant gain importance when correlated with molecular evidence.  Many new combinations are proposed.  A key using anatomical features to molecularly (phylogenetically) recognized coprinoid genera is provided.
