Lewis E. Anderson
(Professor
Emeritus)
Lewis Anderson joined the Department of Botany at Duke in 1936 and has
been an active researcher and outspoken member of the department since
then. Over the course of his career, Lewis has conducted cytological and
floristic research on mosses, with a special emphasis on the moss flora
of the Southeastern United States. His floristic work culminated in the
publication of The Mosses of Eastern North America, written in
collaboration with Howard Crum. Since his retirement in 1980, Lewis has
continued his research, and has had the time to work through a mountainous
backlog of unidentified collections. His main obsession at this point
is the genus Sphagnum.
When Lewis joined the department in 1936, the bryophyte herbarium consisted
of a few thousand specimens houses in some shoe boxes. The collection
presently numbers approximately 230,000 accessions, due in large part
to the activities of Dr. Anderson and his students. In recognition of
his contributions, the bryophyte herbarium was formally named the L.E.
Anderson Bryophyte Herbarium in November, 1998.
