MILLER'S CLASSIFICATION (1971)

Miller (1971) recognized 9 families arranged according to 23 principles for moss evolution, giving a classification that in his opinion should reflect phylogeny.

He gave more emphasis to gametophytic characters than to sporophytic ones.

E.g. Ephemeropsis was moved to the end of the order on the basis of the proposition that its gametophyte has been reduced through evolution from a more complex one.
