When most people think of endangered species, they think of animals
like the Gray Wolf or the California Condor.
There are 746 plants species listed as Threatened or Endangered by the
US Fish and Wildlife Service. Of these 713 are flowering plants,
5 are conifers, 26 are ferns or fern allies, and 2 are lichens. Recovery
plans exist for 585 of these species. In comparison, there are 1,070
animals, both vertebrate and invertebrate, listed. There are recovery
plans for 392 animal species.
