GENERAL INFORMATION

American Society for Microbiology: Everything from recent news to lab exercises to significant microbiology events of the last 125 years.

Centers for Disease Control: Lots of good links to publications and other information.

Duke University Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology: Information about cool microbial research going on here at Duke.

EPA Microbiology Site: Includes information on methods of testing for certain bacteria in water and other types of samples. They also have several interesting pages on biopesticides.

Gideon: Global Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Network site.

Microbes.info: A microbiology information portal containing a vast collection of resources including articles, news, frequently asked questions, and links pertaining to the field of microbiology.

Transgenic Crops: an introduction and review by Colorado State University. Many crops are produced using Agrobacterium species to insert genes of interest. Check this site out to learn more.

Microbial Life: Maintained by the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and Montana State University, Bozeman. Provides information about microbes that dwell in the ocean and in extreme environments such as hot springs.

Microbe Zoo: Part of the Digital Learning Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University, this site provides an introduction to the microbial inhabitants of various environments.

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, PHYLOGENETICS, AND TAXONOMY

DNA interactive: Interactive virtual labs covering DNA methods, including the PCR demo covered in lab which can be found under "manipulation."

Bacterial Nomenclature: The annotated up-to-date list of validly published bacterial names at this site can help you keep up with recent changes.

Bergey's Manual: The source for modern bacterial taxonomy.

BioInteractive by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute: Interactive virtual labs, including one on identification of bacteria using 16S rDNA (similar to what you do in lab) and one on immunology with an ELISA test (another thing we do in lab). The website has won several awards and may be a good way to learn more about procedures we do in lab.

Genomes Online Database (GOLD): A list of species with complete genome data available.

Microbial Genomes Program: Check out the growing number of prokaryotic genome sequences available for study.

NCBI: The taxonomy home page for the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

The Ribosomal Database Project II: Multiple resources for the use and identification of rDNA sequences.

The Tree of Life: Phylogenies of all kinds of organisms, including bacteria.

MICROBIOLOGY BLOGS

Small Things Considered: The Microbe Blog by Moselio Schaechter.

Aetiology: Discussing causes, origins, evolution, and implications of disease and other phenomena, by Tara Smith.

The Tree of Life: Phylogenomics and evolutionary microbiology, by Jonathan Eisen.

Twisted Bacteria: News and information about actinomycetes, by Cesar Sanchez.

Adopt A Microbe: Cartoon images and profiles of various microbes, by Emma Lurie.

Microbiology Bytes: The latest news about microbiology in a form that everyone can understand, by Alan Cann.

INFORMATION ON SPECIFIC ORGANISMS

Azolla and Anabeana Symbiosis: Learn about the mutually beneficial relationship between certain water ferns and Cyanobacteria.

Cyanosite: Learn more about Cyanobacteria, including Azolla and Anabaena symbiosis. Great pictures of heterocysts!

Global Impact of Bird Flu: Great resource from the BBC which has an animation of the bird flu virus spread. Includes bird flu cases, human cases, and bird migration patterns/zones.

MUSHROOM INFORMATION

Mushroom Recipes: Okay, so now that you have learned how to grow mushrooms in lab, here is a great website on how to cook them. This site contains recipes for shiitake, oyster, portabella, enoki, royal trumpet, pompom, and crimini mushrooms.

Mushroom Council: Want information about the production, nutrition, food service sales, or retail information about the mushroom industry, check this site out. This site also has some recipes.

Mushroom Grower's Newsletter: Interested in learning more, check out this website. You can read past articles, or even check out their links to advertisers for kits and other such mushroom cultiviation equipment. Please note that we are not in anyway promoting this company or its newsletter, just listing it as an interesting website for learning more information on mushroom cultivation.

Fungus of the Month: By Tom Volk at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Click on FotM to view the archive. This site features various additional information on fungi.

MICROBIOLOGY JOURNALS

Nature, Science, PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), PLoS Biology (Public Library of Science):

These general science publications present many ground-breaking findings in various fields, so you will have to use the search functions or scan through multiple issues to find microbiology related topics. Science and Nature also frequently non-technical summaries of articles which can be useful for understanding the significance of the studies, but your papers should be based on the original research articles.
